Nikon’s silicone objectives are corrected for use with silicone as the immersion between objective and sample.
Silicone with a refractive index of ~1.4 matches biological and tissue samples well, and the long working distance makes the lenses ideal for microscopy of 3D cell cultures and thick tissue samples.
The silicone lenses also have high numerical aperture and enable visualization of cellular dynamics with high S/N even deep inside the sample.

Observe live samples for long periods of time without having to add more immersion

Silicone oil is durable and does not evaporate quickly.
It is also stable at the higher temperatures required for live cell cultures, for example.
This allows longer time-lapse series to be made without having to add more immersion (as is necessary with water as a medium, for example).
The series is available in several magnifications (25X, 40X, 60X and 100X) so it is possible to switch from low magnification to high magnification without having to clean and change the medium.

Newly developed glass with high degree of correction

Nikon is the only supplier that manufactures its own glass and has developed a new glass (short-wavelength refractive) with the silicon series that reduces the chromatic aberration for short wavelengths.
This extends the spectral range that can be used without aberrations.
In addition, the silicone lenses, like all lenses in the Lambda series, are treated with “Nano Crystal Coat”, an anti-reflective surface that dramatically reduces internal reflections.
